Details
The first tea plants in Ceylon (modern day Sri Lanka) were established in 1839 at the Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya, under the supervision of The East India Company. The First estate planted, in 1840, belonged to Chief Justice Sir Anthony Oliphant, who lived at Queen’s Cottage near Nuwara Eliya, a region which still produces some of the finest Ceylon teas. It was with the devastation of the island’s coffee estates by ‘coffee rust’ in 1889, that tea came into its own as a large scale alternative crop. This superb Ceylon tea is named after the man who had the vision to plant tea on his estate in those early years.
We are proud to be a member of the Ethical Tea Partnership (ETP), a non-commercial alliance of international tea companies who share a vision of a thriving global tea sector that is socially just and environmentally sustainable.
